440C, having been subjected to high temperature tempering (470 to 480°C), can have a hardness between SUJ2 and M50. Accordingly, this steel can be used reliably at a maximum temperature of 200°C. In high temperature environments at 600°C or more, even high-speed steel is not sufficient in hardness.
